Description: 
General description of data set
Description of the data and file structure: This data set contains data extracted from medical records of horses older than one month but less than two years of age, that presented to six different equine hospitals and were subjected to exploratory laparotomy due to colic (UCPH, Bjerke, NMBU, UDS, EEH, and MH) during the maximum retrospective record availability at each clinic, which was up to 15 years. Data extracted contains demographics (age, sex, breed), date of admission, diagnosis, signs of Parascaris infection, anthelmintic treatment history (when available) and outcome. The data were used to explore the occurrence of Parascaris spp. induced colic in this age group. The data is structured in six different data sets, each set representing retrospective data of horses that met the inclusion criteria for each hospital. Two data sets (UDS and MH) only include the occurrence of Parascaris spp. in the included age group, showing both surgical and medical cases as well as survival data. Specific data on these cases (i.e. breed, exact age, specific colic diagnosis) can be acquired by the corresponding author on request.

The data set was retrieved from medical records from six different Equine hospitals. The hospitals all use different Electronic journal systems and thus the information provided is in some cases different for each hospital. For the hospitals UDS and MH further information on the horses can be provided from the corresponding author.

The data sets are organized as separate data sets for each hopsital (n=6), with a detailed description of the data sets below.

Specific description of each column in each data set: 
(1)	Data set UCPH: contains 23 columns: “IdStudy”: notes the patients specific study ID, “Breed”: notes the patients breed, “Sex”: notes the patients gender, “Date of birth”: notes the horses exact birth date, “Age_admission”: age in years.months calculated from the date of birth and date of admission, 	“Age_admission_note”: added to note the few cases where the exact age was unknown, “Colic related to parascaris”: if the journal noted that the colic was related to an active Parascaris infection, “Admission_date”: notes the date the horse was admitted to the hospital, “Surgery yes/no”: notes if abdominal surgery was performed, “Diagnosis”: notes the horse’s final diagnosis, “Comments_disease”: notes any descriptive comments to the diagnosis, “Parascaris related pathology”: notes what intestinal pathology was related to the Parascaris infection (coded as:  0 = none, 1 = impaction, 2 = intussuception, 3 = volvulus), “Parascaris noted?”: more descriptive information of the infection, “Treatment done”: notes if treatment was medical or surgical (coded as:  0 = none, 1= medical, 2= surgical, 3= medical because owner refused surgery), “Short term outcome”: notes if the horse was discharged from the hospital (coded as:  0=survived, 1=died by itself, 2= euthanasia because of extremely poor prognosis, 3 = euthanasia on owners request), “Long term_Outcome”: noted on the horses where this was available (coded as: 0= survived 100 days, 1= euthanized within 100 days of colic-related reasons, 2= euthanized within 100 days of other reasons), “Necropsy_performed”: noted if necropsy was performed in horses that did not survive (False: NO, True: yes), “Necropsy_Diagnosis”: in horses where necropsy was performed, notes diagnosis made, “Comments_outcome”: notes any additional comments to the horse’s outcome, “Recent anthelmintic treatment”: notes the most recent treatment given for treatment of intestinal parasites (coded as:  0=never 1= unknown, 1= yes, 2= no), “Days since last anthelmintic”: notes how many days prior admission the horses was treated, 	“Anthelmintic drug used”: notes drug used for treatment (coded as: 1: ivermectin; 2: ivermectin+praziquantel; 3: Moxidectin; 4: Fenbendazol), “Result of latest fecal examination”: notes the result of any fecal sample taken. 
(2)	Data set Bjerke and NMBU: Each data set contains 9 columns: “IdStudy”: notes the patients specific study ID, “Date admitted”: notes the date that the horse was admitted to the hospital; “Age”: notes the horse’s age at admission (w=weeks, m=months, y=years); “Breed”: notes the horse’s breed, “Dx surgery”: notes the diagnosis made at abdominal surgery, “Dx postmortem”: notes if a diagnosis was made at necropsy (na = not applicable), “Enterotomy performed”: notes if enterotomy was performed during the surgery, “Survived to discharge”: notes if the horse survived and was discharged from the hospital, “worming history”: notes any information of previous treatment for intestinal parasites. 
(3)	Data sets UDS and MH: These data sets contain logical tables describing number of horses admitted for colic in the included age group. The tables include a total of 12 columns: “Year”: notes year of admission; “medical”: notes that the horse received medical treatment for its colic; “surgical”: notes that the horse received surgical treatment for its colic; “TOT”: notes total number of patients with colic admitted within the set age category that year; “signs of”: notes if the report described signs of Parascaris to be present, “OBSTR”: notes if Parascaris obstruction of the small intestine was present; “found at”: notes if the parasite infection was found at surgery or necropsy; “discharged”: notes how many horses (medical or surgical depending on column) survived to discharge from the hospital; “euthanized”: notes how many horses (medical or surgical depending on column) were euthanized at the hospital; “intraop”: notes if the horse was euthanized during surgery.In addition ,each data set contains two columns "Diagnosis at surgery": notes intestinal lesion observed at surgery, horses may have had more than one lesion, "Numer": notes number of horses found with specified lesion. 
(4)	Data set EEH: contains 12 columns: “Patient ID”: notes the horse’s study ID; “Year”: notes the year of admission to the hospital; “Age:in:months”: notes the horse´s age in months (12+ means older than 12 months, but less than 24 months); “Breed”: notes the breed of the horse (abbreviations used: SW: Swedish warmblood, st: Standardbred); “Sex”: notes the gender of the horse (M = male, F = female); “Anthelmintic treatment”: notes any treatment for parasite infection given; “Drugs used”: notes the specific anthelmintic drug given, “Short-term outcome”: notes if the horse was discharged from the hospital”: “Intestinal lesion”: notes the specific lesion noted at surgery; “signs of Parascaris infection”: notes if any record of Parascaris infection was noted; “Enterotomy yes or no”: notes if enterotomy was performed during surgery; “Parasitology”: notes the result of any fecal sample taken.

Data Quality:
The data is retrospective and collected from medical records. This will result in missing data and non-uniform data due to the data being dependent on the treating veterinarian's recording of the patient at the time of treatment. Medical records from different electronic journal systems, hospitals and countries will differ.
