General information about data set: Estimated soil carbon inputs and modeling results for Swedish arable land under rotation in areas approved for environmental compensation (DOI: https://doi.org/10.5878/rsvb-cb29) Creator: Sergio Alejandro Barrios Latorre Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Biosystems and Technology ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1924-5318 This document explains the variables presented in the text file named "SOC_inputs_and_modelling.tsv". The data presented here is the result of calculations of soil carbon inputs in Swedish arable land for 84 yield survey districts (SKOs) approved by the Swedish Board of Agriculture for environmental compensation. The estimations were based on biomass availability for each SKO from an earlier database provided by Barrios Latorre (2024), information collected from the statistics database of the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordburksverket), and Statistics Sweden (SCB, 2023). The dataset also includes the results of average estimated soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks at steady state, calculated using the most recent calibration of the Introductory Carbon Balance Model (ICBM) (Menichetti et al., 2024), and extrapolating the edaphoclimatic factor from the production areas (Andrén et al., 2008) to the SKOs. The geospatial data containing the boundaries of the SKOs can be requested from Jordbruksverket or accessed directly from the previous dataset (https://doi.org/10.5878/t9ey-ac36). Scenarios Different scenarios defined by the use of crop residues for biogas production and the cultivation of IC were considered in the carbon modeling. In the dataset, columns are distinguished by adding the scenario at the end of each variable name. When the values of a column apply to more than one scenario, all scenarios are included at the end of the variable name separated by a dot "." (e.g. ""S1.S3""). S1: Base or reference scenario with no removal of crop residues or cultivation of intermediate crops (IC). S2: Alternative scenario with IC cultivation. The main IC species selected and used in other scenarios is oilseed radish. Therefore, the nomenclature S2a was used to differentiate it from the use of a grass-clover mixture as an alternative IC, which was labeled S2b. S3: Alternative scenario where crop residues are harvested for biogas production, with the return of resulting digestate as soil amendment. S4: Alternative scenario with IC cultivation and harvest of crop residues. S5: Alternative scenario with IC cultivation and where both crop residues and IC biomass are harvested Abbreviations, definitions, and units Abbreviation Definition Unit Arable_land: Share of agricultural land used, or that can be used, for crop cultivation (excluding permanent pastures). Hectare Rotation_land: Assumed fraction of arable land under crop rotation. This excludes grazing pastures (betesvall). Hectare re: Edaphoclimatic factor. Dimensionless AGB_i: Annual inputs of carbon derived from aboveground biomass, in the form of harvestable crop residues and stubble. Tonnes per hectare BGB_i: Annual inputs of carbon derived from belowground biomass (roots). Tonnes per hectare OA_i: Annual inputs of carbon derived from organic amendments, comprised of manure and digestate, depending on the scenario. Tonnes per hectare Total_i: Sum of AGB_i, BGB_i, and OA_i. Tonnes per hectare Css_AVG: Average SOC stocks at steady state. Tonnes per hectare Css_SD: Standard deviation of SOC stocks at steady state. Tonnes per hectare References: Andrén, O., Kätterer, T., Karlsson, T., & Eriksson, J. (2008). Soil C balances in Swedish agricultural soils 1990–2004, with preliminary projections.
