The course will provide basic knowledge on predictive and generative AI, focusing on the tools for bioinformatics, protein structure predictions, protein interactions (RoseTTaFold, RFDiffusion, AlphaFold2), and computer vision techniques for image and video analysis applicable for microscopy images as well as other types of data. The course will include use cases for AI by Swedish industries and academic researchers and will also include discussions around ethical aspects of AI applications. After completing the course, students will be able to navigate the available tools, know about state of the art and future perspectives in AI methods, and have a basic understanding of AI-based facilities available within Sweden. Students who will attend the practical part of the course will gain hands-on experience in a computer vision-related project provided by the course.","Content":"The course includes a series of interactive lectures on AI tools during which students will get opportunities to try out some of the AI tools in a supervised environment. Lectures will be complemented with short homework and discussions. The course also includes a practical part, during which students will work on an AI-based computer vision project (object detection, segmentation, target tracking, or similar) designed specifically for this course, with a possibility for the students to use their own research data if applicable.","Examination formats":"A student should attend at least 80% of lectures and seminars (including the final seminar) to obtain 3 credits. Students who will participate in the practical second part of the course will obtain two additional credits. The examination will comprise a short presentation by each student during the final seminar. These presentations will be discussed by all participants of the course.\n\nStudents participating in the practical part will present the projects they worked on, including a brief introduction, summary of their results, issues and troubleshooting.\n\nStudents who attended only the theoretical part of the course will present their summary of a published article reporting use of an AI tool for research in biology. Such presentations will include a brief description of the background, general description of the AI tool, results and a short discussion of the limitations and potential troubleshooting. \r\n- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.\r\n\r\n- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.\r\n\r\n- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.\r\n\r\n- For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission.
