METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: All behaviour included in the data files were extracted from digital video recordings made using HikVision digital cameras. Behavioural recoding methods used can be found in the affiliated publication: DOI.

Methods for processing the data: Behavioural recoding methods used can be found in the affiliated publication: DOI.
People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Johanna Stenfelt, Rebecca Grut, Cady Chan, Heta Rautiainen, Madeline Ketner, and Maria Vilain Rørvang, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Dept. Biosystems and technology, Alnarp, Sweden.

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: [Straw_engagement]

Number of variables: 6

Number of cases/rows: 308

Variable List: Each row represents one recording in one pen (i.e., one pig group in one pen), hence this data is at pen level. Specific treatment is given (four levels: control_floor, control_rack, odour_week, odour_day). Date refers to which date the recording was done. Exp_week refers to which experimental week the pigs were in at the given recording time. Pen_ID refers to the ID of the pig pen. Pig_room refers to each of the four pig rooms. The behavioural measure of straw engagement is measured in seconds.

Missing data codes: Missing data is represented by “na”/”NA”.

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: [Relative_interaction]
Number of variables: 9

Number of cases/rows: 298

Variable List: Each row represents one recording in one pen (i.e., one pig group in one pen during the focus period 10:00-11:00), hence this data is at pen level. The behavioural measures are “Rack_with_straw” which refers to the total duration per pen per day pigs interacted with their rack containing straw, “Straw_on_floor” which refers to the total duration per pen per day pigs interacted with straw on the floor, and “Other_inventory” refers to the total duration per pen per day pigs interacted with other inventory. The behavioural measures are measured in seconds. Straw_provided is measured as 1/0, with 1 representing straw provided, and 0 representing straw not provided within the focus period 10:00-11:00.

Missing data codes: Missing data is represented by “na”/”NA”.

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: [Welfare_scores]

Number of variables: 27

Number of cases/rows: 1640

Variable List: Each row represents one recording in one pen (i.e., one pig group in one pen), hence this data is at pen level. Specific treatment is given (four levels: control_floor, control_rack, odour_week, odour_day). Date refers to which date the recording was done. Exp_week refers to which experimental week the pigs were in at the given recording time. Pen_ID refers to the ID of the pig pen. Pig_room refers to each of the four pig rooms. Observer refers to the ID of each observer, and when all observers scored the pens the ID is “All”. Batch refers to which batch of pigs. Total_Pigs refers to the total number of pigs inside the given pen at the time of scoring. In each the three categories of welfare scores Ear, Tail and Body: The columns refer to the scores within the categories: Ear includes five scores (0-4) represented by each their column (Ear_0, Ear_1 ect.), Tail includes five scores (0-4) represented by each their column (Tail_0, Tail_1, etc.), Body includes three scores (0-2) represented by each their column (Body_0, Body_1, ect.). After all score columns, the sum column refers to the total sum and column Ear, Tail, and Body refers to the average of the scores when averaged across the total number of pigs in that given observation/row.

Missing data codes: Missing data is represented by “na”/”NA”.

DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: [Play_behaviour]

Number of variables: 9

Number of cases/rows: 4657

Variable List: Each row represents one behaviour category (16 categories) within one pig pen, meaning that data is at behaviour category level within pen. Day_in_week refers to the number of days in the total period observed for each pen (1-15 days). Behaviour_category refers to the play behaviour categories (hop, headtoss, pivot, scamper, flop, throwstraw, running, gamboling, climb, follow, carry straw, shake straw, carry object, shake object) and rubbing and rolling behaviour. For each category frequency and duration (in seconds) are listed as the last two columns.

Missing data codes: Missing data is represented by “na”/”NA”.
