The data was collected by Lisa Petersson and Daniel Jensen in Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan (36.77° N, 139.43° E, elevation 1380-1470 m‎) between June and October 2022. For detailed explanation about the data collection, see Methods in the article "Long-term deer exclusion releases dwarf bamboo, reducing vascular plant diversity" by Petersson et al. The manuscript for the article was submitted to Applied Vegetation Science 2024-05-06. ........................................................................................ Explanation of column headings plot There are ten plots per stand and the first plot of the stand (the central plot) has the same number as the stand. For instance, in stand 521 there are ten plots: 521-530. Tree_no A number in this column indicates that the tree measured is the plot center tree, that also constitutes the plot center for the vascular plant inventory - all vascular plant plots are 10m2 and are surrounding a tree of either Larix kaempferi or Quercus crispula (see Explaination_file_Plot_data20240506.txt). base_dist This is the distance in meters from the tree measured to the base tree (the most central tree of the stand which has the same number as the stand). Stand coordinates were collected from the base tree. So by knowing the distance and angle to the base tree it would be possible to calculate the position for all trees measured in the data set. base_angle This is the angle in degrees measured from each tree when aiming at the base tree (the most central tree of the stand which has the same number as the stand). tree_sp Tree species. dist Distance in meters from the measured tree to the plot center tree. circumference Circumference of the measured tree in centimeters. angle Measured angle in degrees from the measured tree to the plot center tree. fork If trees are forked at 1.3 meters height, this is indicated by a number in this column. All stems >1.3 meters (single and forked) are measured. radius Size of plot (radius) in meters. Normally all trees within a 7 meters radius were measured. However, if there where less than four trees within 7 meters, the plot radius was extended to 10 meters.
