The course will provide a broad overview of fire as a disturbance factor in Earth ecosystem and will lay ground for a more in-depth understanding of its impacts in the past and the future. The course will focus predominantly on boreal and temperate systems, although some attention will be given to other biomes where fire plays an important role (e.g. regions with Mediterranean climate and Arctic).\n\nThe course content includes *lectures* on the following topics:<br>\n\\# Global role of fire over the Holocene\n\n\\# Role of fire in boreal and temperate ecosystems\n\n\\# Fires and forest biodiversity: mixed-severity vs. high-severity fires\n\n\\# Interactions of fires with other disturbance agents\n\n\\# Carbon dynamics driven by fire activity\n\n\\# Dendrochronological analyses of past fire histories\n\n\\# Paleochronological proxy of past fire activity: advantages and limitations\n\n\\# Fire and humans; economy of fire suppression: is there an optimal solution?\n\n\\# Climatology of fire activity in the Nordic region\n\n\\# Fire behavior and its modelling\n\n\\# Effect of fire on animal populations\n\n*Excursions*\n\nWe plan *three* excursions\n\n**Mandatory elements**\n\nParticipation in Pre week assignment\n\n75 % participation in lectures on site\n\nParticipation on the excursions\n\nWritten exam","Betygsformer":"Kraven för kursens olika betygsgrader framgår av betygskriterier, som ska finnas tillgängliga senast vid kursstart.","Examinationsformer":"The evaluation of student performance will be carried out as follow: <br>\n(a) The quality of pre- and post-DLE assignments (short literature reviews).\n\n(b) Assessment of student activity during discussions following lectures and field excursions.\n\n(c) A written examination.\n\nFor the mark “**passed**” the student should actively participate in all course elements, demonstrate good understanding of fire science concepts, passed written exam and complete course assignments. \r\n- Examinatorn har, om det finns skäl och är möjligt, rätt att ge en kompletteringsuppgift till den student som inte blivit godkänd på en examination.\r\n- Om studenten har ett beslut från SLU om riktat pedagogiskt stöd på grund av funktionsnedsättning, kan examinatorn ge ett anpassat prov eller låta studenten genomföra provet på ett alternativt sätt.\r\n- Om denna kursplan läggs ned, ska SLU besluta om övergångsbestämmelser för examination av studenter, som antagits enligt denna kursplan och ännu inte blivit godkända.\r\n- För examination av självständigt arbete (examensarbete) gäller dessutom att examinatorn kan tillåta studenten att göra kompletteringar efter inlämningsdatum.
